Why Use a Word Counter?
- ✓Meet word limits precisely.Academic essays, freelance briefs, and grant applications often have strict word minimums or maximums. Real-time counting prevents the surprise of being 200 words over at submission time.
- ✓Optimize content for readability. The reading time estimate helps you gauge whether an article is too long for your target audience. Blog posts between 1,500–2,500 words tend to attract the best SEO performance while remaining readable.
- ✓Stay within social media character limits. Each platform has different limits. Our tool shows exactly how close you are to the limit for Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook in one view — no switching apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the word counter count words?
Words are counted by splitting your text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) and filtering out empty tokens. A sequence of characters separated by at least one space counts as one word. This matches the convention used by Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both. The Statistics panel shows total character count (including spaces) and character count excluding spaces. The social media limits use total characters including spaces, which matches platform counting methods.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is calculated based on an average adult reading speed of 200–250 words per minute. The displayed estimate rounds up to the nearest minute. Silent reading speeds vary widely (150–400 wpm), so treat this as an estimate.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to any server, stored in any database, or retained after you leave the page. The tool is fully private.
Why does my word count differ from Microsoft Word's?
Different tools use slightly different word boundary definitions. For example, hyphenated words (well-known) may be counted as one word or two depending on the implementation. Our tool treats hyphenated words as one token. The difference is typically 0–5 words for normal text.
